The past year has been the most amazing, challenging, and rewarding of my life, thanks to her. I don’t remember what life was like before Afton and I — well, technically just Afton — had Lakyn Kay, and frankly, that doesn’t bother me.
Our lives revolve around her now, and I hope and pray that she feels how truly loved she is. I’m sure we spoil her more than we should, but can you blame us? Just look at that perfect little face; a face that brightens when I walk in the door after work and makes me forget how exhausted or stressed I am. It can melt my heart when she’s in the middle of throwing a fit. What can I say, she has me wrapped around her finger. That’s no small feat, considering I’m not small anymore. And her fingers are tiny.
Her first birthday is bittersweet for all of the same reasons that you typically hear parents talk about. She is changing, learning, and growing so rapidly that, while it’s exciting and fun to watch, a part of me wants to preserve and hang on to those moments forever.
So here’s to year two and making the most out of the new moments we’ll create and share with her.
And Lakyn, if you’re reading this (you know, when you learn to read tomorrow), I love you.
